In 2019, the Indonesian government initiated a major policy shift to electrify its transportation sector, driven by rising fossil fuel import costs and the country’s ambition to reduce reliance on internal combustion engine vehicles. Indonesia’s position as Southeast Asia’s largest market and its abundant nickel reserves—vital for EV battery production—present a strategic advantage. President Prabowo Subianto has made EV development a national priority, aiming to boost annual economic growth to 8 percent by 2029, reduce dependence on imported oil, and accelerate progress toward net-zero emissions by 2060. The government’s emphasis on industrialization through nickel-based battery production is seen as a pathway to escape the middle-income trap by fostering job creation and economic resilience.

To support this transition, Indonesia has introduced favorable regulations and incentives, attracting global EV players like Hyundai, Wuling, and BYD. Presidential Regulation No. 55/2019 and PP No. 74/2021 have played key roles in stimulating investment in EV assembly. However, EV adoption still lags, comprising only 5 percent of car sales in 2024, due to limited charging infrastructure and concerns over battery range. To address these gaps and strengthen renewable energy investment, RE Invest Indonesia aim to connect global investors with local developers and policymakers, reinforcing the nation’s push toward sustainable, energy-independent growth and promoting the theme of Indonesia as the next EV production hub.
